Meet Johana: A Bright Mind Growing at Our Community Library

At just 12 years old, Johana already understands the power of education, creativity, and community. A 5th-grade student at an elementary school in rural Haiti, Johana has been coming to our community library for more than three years — and in that time, she’s discovered a world of opportunity.

“I participate in the knitting class and the BrainPOP sessions held at the library,” Johana shares. “I love borrowing books. One of my favorites is a story about Ana, who shows you she is by the sea, and she cooks in the kitchen.”

For Johana, the library is more than a building with books. It’s a place to explore new skills, nurture her imagination, and build confidence.

“Coming to the library has helped me a lot,” she says with a smile. “I’ve learned how to do research on the Internet, and how to make clothes and bags in knitting class. The books I read help me share stories with my classmates at school.”

Johana even thinks about how to keep this special space welcoming for others. “I wish all the children who come to the library will take care of it and not make it dirty, so the cleaning staff won’t have extra work. That way, the library can always stay clean and enjoyable for everyone.”
